Dat Han van der Toorn zijn wortels heeft in de recamewereld en het calvinistische Holland blijft zichtbaar door het veelvuldig gebruik van geschilderde mededelingen en verwijzingen naar de Bijbel en het Hebreeuwse alfabet.
Han's latere werk met acryl is minder (sur)realistisch, maar directer en sneller. Echter inhoudelijk, dan wel voorzien van een soms net niet of net wel te doorgronden geheimzinnige mededeling... Eigelijk is Han een contra figuratief schilder.

Van der Toorn has his roots in the advertisement-business, but the calvanistic Holland stays visible by using painted texts and signs from the Holy Bible and the language God taught us: The Old Hebrew-language! Painted Words of God or improvised words of him own are combined with signs of modern iconografic.
Allthough the message stays a mystery for most Adams and Eve's, there is born in the meanwhile a tension or sometimes an explosion of a just not/yes inplanted secret message. It seems as if this 'painter' is launched from another world than we are living in! Later work is less (sur)realistic like the cobra's Lucebert and Constant. But containing a secret message that is sometimes understandable and sometimes not. More precise, Han van der Toorn is a contra-figurative painter.
The contents of Han van der Toorn’s work has its roots in Dutch Calvanism. Through the use of signs and symbols, it seeks to make the Holy Bible visible. The first 5 books of Moses; the last 5 epistles of the New Testament; Old Hebrew …the language God; universal and secret messages; Adam and Eve… and much, much more… provide Han with the creative springboards for work.
